Due to its proximity to the steep mountains that surround Lake Chapala, the village of San Juan Cosala has periodically experienced flooding and mudslides during the rainy season, flooding local streets and homes and at times inundating homes with mud. In the past, these events have caused significant suffering in the community, due to the loss of clothing, shoes, bedding, linens, furniture, toys, stoves, refrigerators, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, and at times entire houses. When one of these events occurs, Operation Feed volunteers and donors rally to replace lost items and help the community to rebuild and recover.
